Dogs – there must be thousands of them. In the heat of the day, when the streets are completely deserted, they are the only ones left wandering. At the intersection of 27th and 42nd, there were actually more dogs than Mexicans. It seems the heat doesn't bother them as much as it does everyone else; they just wait by the signposts for the next short storm to pass.
